It's awesome to finally see the man, the myth, the legend John Truby himself in action on this podcast. His reputation precedes him with all the credit and praise you've given him.
We missed you, Michael.
He's on beyond the screenplay every week. Check it out.
@@abstractdaddy1384 Beyond the screenplay is not the same. I listened to it a handful of times but to me it's just a bunch of people rambling.
@@chris-winterhoff-on-linkedIn
It's obviously not the same as lessons from the screenplay but it is the same as this video, so it doesn't make any sense for the op to say "we missed you Michael".
@@abstractdaddy1384 If a doctor gets a job in Germany only to return after a year, it is a reasonable thing to say "We missed you". Michael hasn't been frequent on this channel at all since the last upload besides this one was one year ago. He's been making a podcast, a completely different medium. Still similar content, but elsewhere. He's returned in this video, hence why OP said "We missed you". Makes sense to me.
Knowing how much you love the Mass Effect games, I don't mind missing out on video essays if it means you're living out your dreams. All my favorite youtubers are accomplishing so much lately. For what it's worth, Im proud of you guys!
Appreciate that
John Truby is a Storytelling Genius.
- Each genre' is a different "Story Type" reflecting a different "Life Philosophy".
- Understanding different genre's leads us to understand life better and write better.
- Genre's are not static. They are dynamic.
- To become a top writer, we need to "Transcend beyond Genre's".
- Twisting the story beat and blending genre's will take our storytelling to next levels.
John Truby and Michael together...instant like
Congrats on the Mass Effect gig, Michael. This is a nice surprise before/during the holidays. Also... I think I may need to grab a copy in readiness for the new year as a creative mentor.
Thank you! :)
Thanks for the inspirng talk to all three of you.
What Truby says about transcending the genre and modifying the beats to create something new out of the known is exactly what the great composers did and still do in music.
Beethoven, for example, had a lot of capable contemporaries who knew how to compose a symphony. But they did what had already been done.
Beethoven on the other hand made something new of the symphony, starting with his Third.
There is an anecdote of an older music professor listening to Beethoven's Fifth when it was performed for the first time. And when the concert was finished he supposedly stormed out of the building muttering: "To compose like that should be forbidden."
Now, that's what I call transcending the genre 😉
John Truby meets LFTS??? This is crazy 😮
A Now You See It and Lessons from the Screenplay video on the same day? God damn. Now all we need is Every Frame a Painting to come back.
Goody! Its great to have you back. (Even for one video). I bought (and voraciously read countless times) John Truby’s book when you mentioned it on a video, so many years ago... In fact, I have bought every book you have ever mentioned. All great! Can’t wait to get my hands on this new book. Thank you so much for a great podcast and the inspiration.
I used to email john and his team would help me with a lot of story issues and questions i would have, im glad to see he’s still thriving! And congrats on bioware and ME5 Michael!!
This was my favorite film analysis channel. I wondered why I forgot about this page and realized it's been years. Thanks for the update and congrats🙏🏾 you're literally living your dreams
A fascinating book. I’m not even a story writer, I just like to analyze stories. And as a philosopher I find the unusual application of philosophy to genres most entertaining.
This was amazing to listen to. I'm so glad John understands that LFTS is a compliment and an asset to his work. I don't know if I ever would have read the Anatomy of Story without this channel, and I will be picking up the Anatomy of Genres immediately!
Seeing him here has furthered my appreciation of his work.
Love love LOVE when RUclips channels that draw heavily from books and other creators interview those creators. I know that this video convinced me to check out this new book, and I'm excited to dive deeper into Truby's insights.
I recently found Beyond the Screenplay, and I’ve been binging (bingeing?) my way through the backlog. This was a treat, one I’ll probably come back to a couple times a year. Looking forward to more content, especially if it comes after a Bioware logo;)
Woah. You’re writing on the new Mass Effect? That’s amazing. Congratulations!
CONGRATS ON THE MASS EFFECT GIG!!! I'm so happy because it's in the best hands possible! Way to go!
Also I got real excited when I saw you had the man himself on the podcast! What a time to be alive.
I wish every ad was as useful as this one. Great work as always.
LFTS and John Truby. Name a more iconic duo.
Love John Truby's work ❤ Thanks for sharing 😊
I'll be asking for this for Christmas!
Many congrats re: Mass Effect! Incredible news. Amazing to have an interview with John Truby to watch, Into the Woids is superb. I hadn't realized he had a new book out, too, I'll absolutely be picking it up.
I can’t believe you guys are involved in the next Mass Effect, I’ve been a fan of both your work and ME for many, many years. And as an aspiring filmmaker, your Mass Effect pitch for Tv for so articulate and inspiring, and now seeing that you made connections with Bioware.. it’s like history happening before my eyes hahahha. Way to goo :)
Thank you!! :D
@@LessonsfromtheScreenplay Thank you !! Learned so much from you all ♥️
Thanks for your amazing work through the years, Michael. A supporter from Italy.
Oh wow! It's been a long time! Been listening to the podcast, but I'm glad to see a post, here, again!
Saving this for later today, when I have more time to listen
I'm not on the cesspool that is Twitter, so it does mean I occasionally miss out on good bits of news that make their way to the top of the pool. Congrats on the Mass Effect gig! My favourite series of games (loved your video on ideas for a TV show). Thanks for posting this too, love Anatomy of Story. Going to pick this one up for sure!
Twitter created a genre in and of itself.
The human cesspool.
What a GREAT comeback!! Thank you so much!
CONGRATS on the Mass Effect! Hustle pays off!!
Congrats Michael! You've definitely put in the time and effort to earn your dream job. Very happy for you 😊 Can't wait to play your game someday!
Thank you!!
Thank you all for this superb conversation. Ordering the book now 😊
I ordered my copy of The Anatomy of Genres before your video was even over. Thank you for bringing this new book to my attention. It will help me greatly as I re-write a script I finished typing into Final Draft last night for NaNoWriMo.
I did, too!
I dont use social media so didnt know you posted on twitter. Congratz on the Bioware gig!!! It explains why there's been no videos. Best of luck.
Thank you!
Happy to see you two together !
Unicorn sighting! 🦄😁 Glad to see you again. Great interview, Michael. 💪 Best of luck on your other projects.
Thank you!
I enjoyed this so much it does not feel like an hour long episode :D
YOU’RE BACK!!!!!!!!
Thank you for doing this interview!
dude! it’s good to see you and this coco with john truby is next tier. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
This was. an incredible interview... I'll definitely be getting that book
Fantastic Interview! Great questions! Truby is true to form! Great analysis! Can't wait to buy that book!
Thank you for this quality conversation!
This is not a drill; HE’S BACK
So good to have a new video Michael... please don't dissapear... my best to you.
After watching your channel’s videos for awhile, I gave in and bought and read Anatomy of Story cover to cover. Of any instructional/advisory material, Truby’s has undoubtedly been the Missy influential on my fiction. I still use many of his techniques, tweaked to work with my writing process. I’m excited you get this new book.
Hope you’ve been well! Excited for your next appearance.
Wow glad to have you back😌
This channel like so many others is absolutely bloody amazing.
I wish Trubys and Yorke into the woods was inaudible here in Oz.
And congrats on the mass effect gig!!!!
You’re the reason I look forward to the next Mass Effect, Michael! You’ve got it, I believe in you!
Such an amazing guest, thank you so much for this
Indeed

WOW, i started playing Mass Effect 2 months ago and now, glad to know that you're working for the next one! I went here because I realized that I haven't been seeing any vid from you recently and then I see this.
I'm so happy for you getting the Mass Effect job.
Selfishly, I'm sad I'll see videos less often from my absolute favorite film-oriented RUclips channel.
Nevermind video essays! So happy you're doing well and the dream job!
Thank you so much! :)
This is a God send 🙏🏾
Congratulations on Mass Effect!
Been a fan for a long time, I'm now an Exec Producer for a UK indie - found your videos hugely useful in learning!
Dang. I went from not being aware of this book, when I first started listening, to being convinced I need to buy it... like, right now. I am about to go to the bookstore today, and wasn't sure yet what book I was going to buy. Now I know! 😆 Thank you for this conversation!!
Just bought the book. Also Subscribed. Excellent!
Great video!
Book's already on the way for my Christmas shopping 🎄
Oh my god I didn't know about the bioware gig! That's so awesome, I am so happy for you 😍
Hey, it's great to see you again!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉missed this content so much ❤❤❤❤❤
I echo 49:43 where she says how people watch stories. Its the same way i feel about anime only fans when they watch anime they watch it like one would watch wrestling they dont seek to understand because it’s always shock value and big pops for them. Primary example is Chainsaw Man, mangaka work hard to draw from multiple sources to tell their stories outside of the medium of anime but when your fan base ( generally speaking) only takes in once source of entertainment and information they don’t appreciate what you’re trying to say or do with your work.
I think the Writing Excuses Podcast season 11 on elemental genres is a great companion approach to this concept
Oh damn congrats on the mass effect gig! Thats whats up! Stay elevating!
John Truby? New book? Say no more! I'm in!
Holy crap! Congratulations on the Mass Effect gig!
He's absolutely right : Mad Men is the best Tv show ever. I've been saying this for years. I'm really glad to hear someone like Truby saying that.
Congrats, Michael!!!! It always makes me happy to see passionate, knowledgeable people be able to move from the video-making/talking head sphere to within the industry writing jobs. You and Alanah Pearce are inspirations!
NGL, I skipped Andromeda because of all the bad press. But I feel like Bioware still deserves the benefit of the doubt with future ME installments. Having you on this future project reaffirms my desire to give the next ME game a chance.
Please continue with your videos
I loved his anatomy of story book. Now his anatomy of genres book is arriving on Monday. Woohoo!!! 🎉
Wow - although I dearly miss yout video essays - you introduced me to so many great works - which I have been diving into with both feet first. Congrats on the Mass Effect game - that is such a cool endeavour! Hope you make it better than the last :P
Great to see another upload!
Is it possible to upload without the frame? I like to watch with subtitles on but they overlapping the other words on the screen :(
My hope for the next mass effect game literally tripled when I heard that you are involved, best of luck!
39:51 FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT!!!!!!!!
200% agree on this
Fantastic
would love to see a breakdown on fleebag. The editing and style is unique and truly sets its apart.
! What a lovely surprise (:
I would love to see you analyse Promising Young Woman. I don't know that much about movies, but i felt like i had been deceived while watching it, like it pretended to be different genres (colourful pop horror or dark vigilante insinuations through the trailers and marketing, all the male actors were well known comedy good guys, ...) to hide what it was really about.
Great video.
Mass Effect? Holy shit, congrats!
I got this book yesterday l! I have to read his first one first then get to it soon this week.
Nice!
Had no idea you were working on Mass Effect. Huge dub.

Sorry if this has been asked already on this channel, but I was wondering if east asian stories have been examined on this channel?
I say this because a lot of anime and manga stories are overall polarizing: loved by the fans, dismissed by many in a western business sense. e.g. "Japan is too random. Their culture is too different, their story structure is incompatible with our 3 plot structure that the west uses," etc.
Is Japan's 4-point-plot style (ki-sho-ten-ketsu) so different it requires a fundamentally different perspective?
Just bought it, gonna let Google read it to me while I work. I'm sure it has some very interesting information about writing.
Hey, about the mix of genres, I like the collision of genres approach mentioned in the Stranger Things video in this channel.
I hadn't heard about the Mass Effect Project!!! I was just thinking "I hope Michael got something really great and that's why we haven't seen them in a minute," and lo and behold!! So excited for you :)
Thank you!!
OMGGG FINALLYYYYY 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Where have you been bro? We miss you!
Hi mam from india screenwriter
Busy with lots of (good) things, but I miss you too :)
I think the hardest genre to write in, at least for me, are bleak horror movies. From a thematic standpoint, these stories often deal with the futility of our actions (bad things happen for absolutely no logical reason, and all you can do is observe), which often leads to rather passive characters. And still, these types of horror stories (Junji Ito's work, Lovecraft, the films Suicide Club and Martyrs) are the ones that stick with me the most. Any advice on fixing this issue of passive characters?
Congratulations on the bioware gig. Although if im honest my expectations story wise just jumped from 0 to 7 now that i know that got u in the writing room lol
YESSSSSSS!!!
Hi there, I'm lost where I should start. Should I begin Anatomy of story first or anatomy of genre? Thanks!
Lovely
I would kill to have a lessons from screen episod about the movie the little things
"It's alive. It's alive!! IT'S ALIVE!! IT'S ALIVE!! IT'S ALIVE!!!!" LFTS subscribers. Probably.
